Kay Ivey’s summoning of the veteran VA commissioner blows up in his face

This is an opinion cartoon

Kay Ivey fired one. And it blew up in his face.

The Alabama Govnah lit a smoking cigar when it fired Commissioner Kent Davis of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. Over what appears to be nothing more than petty politics. to veterans’ expense.

Hell, she doesn’t even have the right to fire Davis. He was hired by the ADVA board. Ivey practiced something rarely used called “supreme executive power” to get Davis out of sight. It went nuclear. On one of Alabama’s only highly respected public officials.

There are a lot of horrible state officials, no good, very bad, Governor Ivey should remove them. looking at you Leigh Gwathney. The stick-in-the-mud seat of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles it’s another cartoon.

Why is Ivey firing retired US Navy Admiral Davis, arguably the most admired and impeccable public official who actually serves his constituents well? Like I said, it sounds like petty politics. But it’s complicated.

My colleague Kyle Whitmire explains it as well as it can be explained right here:

Whitmire: The Long Silly Saga of Kay Ivey’s Nuclear War

An excerpt from Whitmire’s column:

John Saxon is an employment lawyer, and now he is Davis’ lawyer.

He is threatening to sue the governor under Alabama’s ethics law for retaliation.

“If we do file suit, I’ll look forward to taking the governor’s deposition and seeing how she responds when it’s under oath and unscripted,” Saxon said Tuesday, minutes after the governor’s office delivered the letter to Davis.

When I spoke with Saxon later that day, he again said he was looking forward to taking Ivey’s deposition and would invite as many people as he could fit in the room to watch it.

There are legal barriers that the governor’s staff would likely put in the way.

But I’ve known Saxon for years. I saw him working in court. I read other statements he took. And I’ll say this with confidence: If Saxon manages to unseat Ivey, it will make Joe Biden’s debate performance look like Ken Jennings’ winning streak on Jeopardy.
