Truck crashes into bus station near Tel Aviv, injuring dozens, as strikes in Gaza kill at least 22

Dozens of people were injured after a truck crashed into a nearby bus stop Tel Aviv on Sunday, when Israelis were returning to work after a week-long holiday.

The truck crashed into a bus station in the city of Ramat Hasharon, northeast of Tel Aviv, leaving some people trapped under the vehicles. Approximately 35 people were injured, according to first responders.

The bus station, which is close to a central highway intersection, is close to Israel’s Mossad spy agency headquarters and a military base.

The circumstances of the accident remain unknown; however, Asi Aharoni, an Israeli police spokesman, told reporters that authorities were treating it as a terrorist attack. He said the attacker had been “neutralized” without saying whether the attacker was dead and that police were working with Israel’s internal security agency to determine the person’s identity.

Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said six of the injured were in serious condition.

Ronit Glaser, with Magen David Adom, said in a video shared on X that they received a call for a “mass casualty event” near Glilot Junction. She described a chaotic scene as first responders worked to treat the injured and get them to the hospital.

Palestinians have committed dozens of stabbings, shootings and car-ramming attacks over the years. Tensions have risen since the outbreak of the Gaza war, as Israel has carried out regular military raids in the occupied West Bank that have left hundreds dead. Most appear to have been militants killed during exchanges of fire with Israeli forces, but Palestinians participating in violent protests and civilian bystanders have also been killed.

Israeli strikes on Gaza

The latest Israeli strikes continue northern Gaza killed at least 22 people, most of them women and children, Palestinian officials said Sunday, as Israel’s offensive in the isolated and hard-hit north entered its third week and aid groups described a humanitarian catastrophe. Israel said it targeted the militants.

The Gaza Ministry of Health’s emergency service announced that 11 women and two children were among the 22 killed in Saturday night’s strikes on several houses and buildings in the northern Gaza city of Beit Lahiya. Another 15 people are said to have been injured and the death toll could rise. He listed the names of those killed, who mostly came from three families.

The Israeli military said it carried out a precision strike on militants in a structure in Beit Lahiya and took steps to avoid injuring civilians. She disputed what she said were “numbers put out by the media” without elaborating or providing evidence on her behalf.

The war has begun when Hamas-led militants punched holes in Israel’s border wall and stormed into southern Israel in a surprise attack on October 7, 2023. They killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped around 250, that attack. About 100 hostages are still in Gaza, about a third of whom are believed to be dead.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians, according to the local Ministry of Health. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its numbers, but says more than half of those killed were women and children. Israel says it has killed more than 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.

Israel is also fighting Hezbollah Lebanonwhere Israel launched a ground invasion earlier this month after nearly a year of low-level conflict. The militant group Hezbollah, which is a proxy of Hamas and Iran, began firing rockets into Israel after the October 7, 2023 attack.

About 2,000 people were killed, including Hezbollah fighters and commanders, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, which did not say how many were Hezbollah fighters. Israel has accused Hezbollah of placing fighters, command posts and weapons caches in civilian areas, without providing evidence.
