Labor migration policy will see certain jobs reserved for SA citizens

“There are opportunities we should rotate. We have a lot of kids coming out of university who are very educated and skilled,” says Labor and Employment Minister Nomakhosazana Meth.

“There is a law that is being prepared, the Labor Migration Policy, it is an amendment to ensure that certain categories of jobs are kept for South Africans.”

Meth says the government is making progress in amending the draft national policy on labor migration, introduced in 2022.

It provides the framework for regulating the employment of workers so that the country has an efficient labor market.

Meth says they will also aim to reserve more low-skilled jobs for South Africans and monitor the possible exploitation of foreign nationals.

“We believe that employers want to maliciously try to evade the laws of the Republic. They aim to hire these vulnerable foreign brothers and sisters because they are not paid the national minimum wage.”
