Erath parents speak out after fatal shooting

ST.MARTINVILLE — A tragic turn of events at the St.Martinville high school homecoming game… Friday night after a shooting on school grounds leaves one dead and another behind bars, but the shooter is gone – Erath Community Parents shaken and full of questions about how it all happened in the first place.

“To watch the video of our kids running off the field for their lives, I’m upset and I’m still in shock,” said an Erath parent who was at the homecoming game Friday night to watch his child play in the match against St. .Martinville High School.

Erath parents who attended last night’s game are speaking but ask not to be identified. They remember the scary moments on Friday nights when they came to see their son play.

I went in front of the school and that’s when shots were fired,” said a parent.

Sisters Charlotte Goutierrez and Roslyn Ward live streamed the game for the family as it all unfolded.

“I said, God, they’re shooting; then the guy announced he was going to seek shelter and people were running everywhere,” Ward said.

“I actually had a student from St.Martinville High School run to me for safety and that was her first football game; she was terrified,” said the parent.

Zackyric Gardner, 22, is under arrest in connection with the shooting that killed one person.

Head of St. Martinville’s Ricky Martin tells me the shooting happened just minutes before the home game. We also learned that the two men involved in the shooting are former St.Martinville students who frequented a tailgate located on school grounds. Police also believe both men were involved in beef that surfaced a few weeks prior.

“This affected all the kids, not just our kids, but you’re a graduate of this school; you should be grown up enough to act properly,” said another Erath parent.

The mayor confirms that the St.Martinville Alumni Association has been tailgating just hours before the game.

“To hear my son’s voice when he called me to let everyone know that they are all ok. A child should not have to go through this, to call us and ask us if his family is ok,” said the worried parent.

And since this shooting, these parents have lost faith in the city of St.Martinville.

“We were invited to St. Martinville and we no longer feel safe there,” said the parent.

And the high school student brought to safety… now he’s changed his mind.

“We stayed in touch with each other and found out that she had returned her homecoming dress because she was too scared to attend the dance,” the parent said.

St.Martinville High School continued with its homecoming dance Saturday night, which had extra security.

For now, police say this is an ongoing investigation.
