A plan on where the Tampa Bay Rays will be home for 2025 should come before the calendar turns to the new year.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters, including Evan Drellich from the Athletic that they expect a “pretty good plan” by Christmas for what to do with the team after its home, Tropicana Field, suffered significant damage from Hurricane Milton.

“They’re still in damage assessment mode,” Manfred said, according to Drelich. “That has to be done and obviously it’s not just the roof, it’s internal damage as well. They won’t know exactly what will happen until they are. complete this process… It’s just a guess as to how long it will take.”

Manfred went on to say that the league can use a minor league park if needed and that the top priority would be keeping the team in the Tampa market.

“We can make it work in a minor league park,” Manfred said, according to Drellich. “I think there’s probably some flexibility in terms of what we do with the big league schedule.”

The full extent of the damage Tropicana Field sustained during the hurricane is unknown, but at least the roof was blown off and the playing field sustained significant water damage. The rays are already in the middle under development a new ballpark, so simply moving to a minor league park instead of fixing up the current park could be a solid option.

The New York Yankees have an affiliate in Tampa and many other teams have spring training facilities in the area.
