Shohei Ohtani injures left arm sliding into second during Game 2 of World Series, severity uncertain

LOS ANGELES – The Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani injured his left arm during the seventh inning of the team’s Game 2 Saturday World Series against the New York Yankees when he tried to steal second base. The severity of the injury was not immediately clear.

Ohtani strained his left forearm after being tagged out by shortstop Anthony Volpe for the final out of the inning on a slide at first. He lay by the bag for several minutes before being attended to by trainers and left the field.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported from the Dodgers dugout that the problem was with Ohtani’s left shoulder.

The Dodgers held out for a 4-2 win and leads the series 2-0. Game 3 is Monday night in New York.

The Japanese superstar – and presumptive National League MVP – was 0 for 3 with a walk in the game. He is 1-for-8 through the first two games of the Fall Classic and is hitting .260 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in his first postseason in the majors.

Most of Ohtani’s injuries since coming to the majors in 2018 have been pitching-related, including major right elbow surgeries in 2018 and last year. The two-time phenom didn’t pitch this year, but he became the first player in major league history with at least 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in a season.

In September 2019, he underwent surgery on his left kneecap due to a rare, congenital condition. The procedure was on his bipartite kneecap, or a two-part kneecap that did not fuse at birth.

Ohtani missed the 2017 World Baseball Classic after undergoing ankle surgery from an injury sustained during the 2016 Japan Series.
