Tributes have been left to a “nice man and great neighbor” who died after falling from a bridge on the East Lancashire Road. Merseyside Police were called to the road near the junctions of Rainford Road and Abbey Road in St Helens around 1.20pm on Friday 25 October.

A large police presence led to an extensive road closure in the immediate vicinity of the incident, with motorists being asked to avoid the area. The force confirmed last night that a man had died at the scene. A spokesman said: “Sadly the man has been pronounced dead and his next of kin are being notified and will be supported by specialist officers.”

Since the man’s death, a number of people have left tributes and offered their condolences. Lynsey Houlton, who left the following message on the ECHO Facebook page, said: “He was a lovely man and a great neighbor who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

Lorna Plumpton added: “Sadly, thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very difficult time. May he rest in peace.” Karyn Somerville also wrote: “Whispering. Thinking of all my loved ones at this very sad time.” Paul Keelan said: “So sad. Deepest condolences to his family and friends. We can see broken bones, but we never see broken minds.”

Marg Harden said: “So heartbreaking to hear again. May he rest in peace. Thinking of all his family,” while Maria Jones Blundred added: “Rest in peace, very sad .Thinking of all his family and friends at this sad time.”

Others called for changes to be made to the bridge to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future. Sheila Rigby said: “It’s not time to have taller fences along each side to try and prevent this,” while another commenter said: “My thoughts are with the family – I think the rail on the bridge should be higher. to prevent this”. Following the incident, the force said further updates on the investigation would be provided when appropriate.
