The Wolverines have a persistent question at quarterback and didn’t name a starter for the MSU game, while the Spartans found something that worked on offense against Iowa. Effective performance by Aidan Chiles under center led to 32 points with just one turnover.

The winner of the game will be one win away from bowl eligibility, while the loser drops to .500, needing two wins in the last month to reach the postseason.

Pregame notes Michigan vs. Michigan State

Wolverines and Spartans meet for 117th game of the battle for Paul Bunyanwith Michigan holding a sizable lead in the all-time series along with an active two-game winning streak. MSU last won the rivalry in 2021 and is looking for its first win at Michigan Stadium since 2020.

Michigan has struggled to muster any offense this year due to a lack of passes stemming from the quarterback issue and one of the worst turnover problems in the country. Michigan has still found success at times with a run-heavy approach, with the Wolverines ranking in the bottom third of the country in scoring, passing yards and giveaways. Michigan could be without cornerback Will Johnsonwho left the last game early with a leg injury.

MSU has improved drastically on defense of 2023, holding teams to 20.86 points per game and holding Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson, the nation’s second-leading rusher, in check until a late burst into the end zone after the game was called.

Michigan State’s offense, on the other hand, has had some issues, especially with turnovers, but has shown a burst or bust ability. with keels that smoothed out last week. The Spartans turned in a complete performance last week against Iowa with over 200 meters in running and passingbut now they have a test against Michigan’s decorated defense and defensive line.

Michigan vs. Prediction Michigan State, election

Chris Solari, Detroit Free Press: A buried prime-time showdown on the Big Ten Network will prove TV executives wrong as the Spartans and Wolverines live up to their historically heated rivalry with a Big Ten slugfest of the highest magnitude. Chiles continues to get pressure and UM gets home enough to disrupt the early tempo. But MSU’s much-improved defense shut down Mullings and the Wolverines’ running game in a low-scoring affair, with Chiles guiding the Spartans into field goal range for enough hits by Jonathan Kim to snap a two-game losing streak to UM. The choice: MSU 20, UM 13.

Tony Garcia, Detroit Free Press: That this game isn’t a clear run for Michigan shows both how far UM has fallen and the step MSU has taken. UM needs to win the turnover and time of possession battle and get the running game to carry it against a strong MSU front. MSU, however, feels it can win even with a turnover or a problem in the run game with an advantage in special teams and practice. The choice: MSU 22, UM 19.
