Delphi murder suspect Richard Allen’s stepfather snores at trial: report

The stepfather of Delphi murder suspect Richard Allen was caught snoring during testimony linking his stepson to the scene of the brutal slaying of two teenage girls.

On Friday, jurors endured more than seven hours of dense and technical testimony from Melissa Oberg, a former forensic firearms examiner for the Indiana State Police, who explained how she determined that an unused bullet found near the bodies of Abby Williams, 13 years old, and Libby. German, 14, was linked to a gun found at Allen’s home.

Allen’s stepfather was heard snoring and seen closing his eyes during the dry chat, despite being nudged awake, The Daily Mail reported.

Oberg explained that he fired and cycled through several rounds of the .40-caliber Sig Sauger handgun recovered from Allen’s home during an October 2022 search.

She concluded that the “tool marks” left on the bullets he fired were similar to those on the spent cartridge found at the crime scene.

Allen’s attorney, Bradley Rozzi, tried to cast doubt in jurors’ minds about the accuracy of the firearm’s assessment during his cross-examination.

He also pointed out that Oberg reached her conclusion by comparing the bullet to spent cartridges, not unused cartridges, which had just passed through the gun without being fired.

The prosecutors Allen allegedly stalked the teenage girls while hiking near their hometown of Delphi on February 13, 2017, before forcing them at gunpoint from the Monon High Bridge trail into the woods, where he slashed their throats.

Defense attorneys have insisted that Allen is innocent, arguing that there is beyond a reasonable doubt in the prosecution’s evidence.

The 52-year-old man was hit with two counts of indictment each of murder and murder while kidnapping the girls and faces up to 130 years in prison if convicted on all four charges.
