A cordon remained in place until around 2.45pm. A team from the coroner’s office was seen in attendance as a private ambulance arrived at the scene.

Manchester City fans were urged to stay away from the area, with the cordon taking place ahead of the team’s match with Southampton at the nearby Etihad Stadium. A forensic tent was set up on the canal towpath for several hours before the scene was cleared.
