A man who has been charged with murdering his mother after her body was found in a rural caravan park has been pictured for the first time.

Callan Davidson, 29, was charged with murder on Friday after emergency services were called to a property on Henry Street in Gunnedah, in north-central NSW, about 8.20am.

Police found his mother, Cheryl Davidson, believed to be in her 50s, seriously injured in a nearby tent before she later died at the scene.

Police also found a man who was allegedly covered in blood.

Davidson, whose address is listed as Gunnedah Tourist Caravan Park, was later arrested before being taken to Gunnedah Police Station.

He refused to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday and his matter has since been adjourned to Tamworth Local Court on Monday.

It is understood a court order was issued to inform NSW Justice Health that Davidson should be assessed for mental health reasons, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Police set up the crime scene yesterday morning and a knife was found nearby before it was seized. A forensic examination of the crime scene will be carried out.

Earlier, NSW Police Chief Inspector Michael Wurth described the scene as “traumatic”.

Chief Inspector Wurth said officers felt a sense of urgency when they saw the man allegedly covered in blood.

He also revealed that the pair are local residents of Gunnedah.

“We believe the man lived at the caravan park for about two weeks, but the other person … lives in a separate house.”

A report will be drawn up to inform the coroner.
