‘Damage’ Rohit Sharma won’t take series defeat against NZ lightly: Ravi Shastri

India captain Rohit Sharma will be injured after losing the home Test series against New Zealand, Ravi Shastri said on Saturday (October 26). India were bowled out for 113 runs by Tom Latham’s side who won the first Test series against India.

Commenting during the Test match, Shastri said that while Rohit Sharma might look relaxed, he will not take this defeat lightly. Shastri added that Rohit will be hurt by this defeat and will look to make a strong statement in the final Test match to be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

“Rohit Sharma will not take this lightly. He might look very relaxed but deep down he will be hurt,” said Ravi Shastri while commentating on the game.

This was India’s first Test series defeat to New Zealand at home. This effectively ended India’s home rule. India had won 18 consecutive Test series at home – the longest streak in the history of Test cricket. However, New Zealand’s brilliant display with both bat and ball ended the same way.

A disappointed Rohit Sharma spoke at the post-match presentation and said it was a collective failure and New Zealand were the better of the home team in every aspect of the game.

“It’s not what we expected. We have to give credit to NZ – they played better than us. We failed to capitalize on certain moments. We failed to respond to those challenges. And here we are today. I didn’t think we batted enough good. to get runs on the board You have to pick 20 wickets to win, yes, but the batsmen have to put runs on the board,” Sharma said after the match.

“I didn’t hit well enough. Things might have been slightly different if we got a little closer in the first half. We want to do well at the Wankhede and try to win that Test. It is a collective failure. I am not someone who would blame only the batsmen or the bowlers. We will come out with better intent, better ideas and better methods at the Wankhede,” he added.

India have placed themselves in a difficult spot in the World Test Championship points table. They now lead Australia by a small margin, with the other teams quickly catching up. South Africa and Sri Lanka can give India a run for their money if the Indian team also loses the third Test match in Mumbai.
