How to get rid of unwanted prescriptions on National Take Back Medicine Day

(WXMI) — An annual tradition is back. It’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), it is a day used to encourage the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a means of preventing drug abuse and opioid addiction.

It’s a simple process.

Search your medicine cabinet, drawers, or wherever you have these old, expired, or unwanted medications. When it comes to removing them, there are many options in West Michigan.

Priority Health shared a few West Michigan locations open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

  • Kent County Health Department: 700 Fuller Ave. NE, Grand Rapids
  • Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals Care Center: Cutlerville 80 68th St., Grand Rapids
  • Priority Health: 3111 Leonard St. NE, Grand Rapids

East Grand Rapids Public Health is also hosting an open house today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their location at 770 Lakeside Drive SE. They will be with the exception of landings in the lobby between 10:00 and 14:00
Meijer stores are also participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

We were told that anyone, customer or not, can drop off unwanted medication at “easily identifiable” kiosks near each pharmacy in the store. Meijer has already collected nearly 200 tons of unnecessary medicine at its kiosks over the years.

Some items, however, are not accepted. These include: needles or other sharp objects, inhalers, mercury thermometers, medicines containing iodine and illicit drugs.

Meijer Pharamcy’s hours vary by location, so it’s important to check before you walk out the door.

There are likely other local options for you, these often include local law enforcement and national drugstore chains.
