Maryland volleyball was swept by No. 11 Oregon, 3-0, for its fifth straight loss

Oregon’s Noemie Glover rose over the net to drill a spike down the court and seal an ultra-easy set. The second delivered to put Maryland volleyball in a two-set deficit.

The Ducks cruised past the Terps in the final set. No. 11 Oregon swept Maryland in straight sets at Matthew Knight Arena on Friday, 3-0. The result marked the Terps’ fifth straight match where they failed to secure a set.

Both offenses started aggressively.

The first four points each ended with kills. Pin-hitter Samantha Schnitta got off to a quick start with three hits in the first eight runs. The leadoff hitter from Maryland (10-10,1-8 Big Ten) drilled spikes around the court, immediately putting pressure on the Ducks.

Libero Lilly Gunter hit a serve that caught sight of the net and went unreturned, giving the Terps a 7-2 lead right after an Oregon (15-3, 7-2 Big Ten) timeout. Mimi Colyer’s third outside hit kill of the first set cut that deficit to three. The Ducks’ leading killer finished with 20 kills.

Maryland looked comfortable early in a hostile environment, taking advantage of Oregon errors. Six different players scored a kill in the first set. But a four-nil Oregon run clinched the set as Maryland suddenly struggled to reach the final points. Coach Adam Hughes called a timeout.

Oregon defeated Hughes in a national semifinal in 2012 when he was on the Penn State coaching staff. He won three national championships with the Nittany Lions.

Middle blocker Eva Rohrbach served past the barely trailing Oregon defenders, tying the score at 19. But the Ducks took six of the next eight points to seal the set.

Maryland got off to a fast start offensively in the second set. Junior Ally Williams crushed a serve that an Oregon defender couldn’t control, erasing an Oregon lead.

The Ducks offense also shined early. Michelle Ohwobete led that effort, posting back-to-back kills followed by an ace. That extended the lead to 11-7 to force a Maryland timeout.

The Terps answered from halftime.

Outside hitter Sam Csire had a kill and an ace to cut the deficit. A few points later, Rohrbach only slipped a shot between multiple defenders to tie the set. Oregon responded by scoring four straight points in a short span.

Maryland, the Big Ten leader in aces, often found an edge with her serve. That was not the case on Friday. The teams served almost evenly throughout, with only two aces separating them.

Setter Sydney Dowler smashed a serve down the rim that a diving defender couldn’t return, giving Maryland a key two-point lead. But Csire hit a serve into the net a few points later that put the Terps in a one-point hole. Glover took advantage with a kill to end the set.

With the score tied at four, the teams battling for every point early in the third, Maryland’s offense began to struggle. The Ducks looked energetic, constantly finding ways to stretch the points. Libero Mackenzie Morris played a major role in that effort with 16 digs to lead all players.

Oregon went on an eight-nil run to give them a commanding lead and force a Maryland timeout. That run proved fatal for the Terps, marking the last of 14 lead changes. The Ducks recorded a couple of blocks in that span — an area they dominated with five more blocks as the Terps struggled at the net.

Colyer crushed a spike in the middle of the court that the Terps couldn’t return. A few points later, she knocked down a shot that ricocheted off a Maryland defender, sealing the win for Oregon.
