St. Charles completes the return over Belle Chasse | Training sport

An action-packed fourth quarter decided the outcome of a District 9-4A showdown between St. Charles and Belle Chasse.

Belle Chasse entered the night undefeated and did just about enough to keep their perfect record alive, but St. Charles rallied with a fourth-quarter comeback in a 14-13 victory Friday night at Belle Chasse.

St. Charles improved to 2-5 on the season after a tough non-district stretch. The Comets were able to put together a quick score in the final minutes against Belle Chasse (7-1), which was capped by a Skyler Edwards touchdown run.

“We haven’t played well offensively all year,” the St. Louis coach said. Charles, Wayne Stein. “When it came down to it, it was good to see us pull it off. That’s big for us. Hopefully we can grow and build from it because I think we’re a good football team.”

St. Charles got the ball back in Belle Chasse territory after Belle Chasse punted with 2:25 left in the game, and the Comets’ drive began with Landree LeBlanc completing a 29-yard pass to ChrisDon McClain.

LeBlanc then completed a seven-yard pass to Jackson Doster to the one-yard line that led to an Edwards touchdown run on the next play to go up by one point.

“I just found a way to do my job,” Edwards said. “My referees help me a lot. That (landing) was a great moment for me and my team.”

St. John’s two-point conversion attempt. Charles fumbled, but the Comets were able to stop Belle Chasse’s end drive to seal the victory after the Cardinals turned the ball over on downs with 15 seconds left.

Edwards led the way on the ground for St. Charles, finishing with 101 rushing yards on 26 carries.

“(Edwards) averaged 25 carries a game,” Stein said. “It’s kind of our workhorse. He and (ChrisDon) McClain give us a nice one-two punch. I’m proud of the way our guys hung in there and found a way to do it.”

Belle Chasse quarterback Amari Ambrose finished with 107 rushing yards on the night on 26 carries and completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Khai Wallace in the fourth quarter.

“(Ambrose) did a good job,” Belle Chasse coach Stephen Meyers said. “The pass was a good play. We run the ball, that’s our job, and he did a good thing tonight. I thought the defense played well. We only missed a few opportunities in attack.”

Belle Chasse’s first score came in the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Dillan Carter to go up 7-0, but that was quickly followed by a 45-yard touchdown pass by LeBlanc to Noah Tucker to put the Comets up 8. -7 after a successful two point conversion.

“(Tucker’s touchdown) was big because we struggled offensively,” Stein said. “Landree (LeBlanc) made a great throw and Noah went through them. Take it easy everyone. We just don’t have a lot of room for error right now.”

Next for St. Charles has a home district contest on Friday, Nov. 1 against Kenner Discovery. Belle Chasse will be on the road against Shaw next Friday.
