MANHATTAN, Kan. (KCTV) – An 18- and 19-year-old from Lenexa are fighting for their lives at a Topeka hospital after a motorcycle crash in Manhattan.

The Kansas Highway Patrol indicates that around 3:30 p.m., Friday, October 25, emergency crews were called to the area of ​​Highway 24 and Kimball Ave. with reports of a collision between two vehicles.

When first responders arrived, they said they found Thomas D. Shortle, 40, of Marysville, had stopped his 2011 Ford F-150 in the median as he yielded to oncoming traffic northbound, however, the truck bed remained in the southbound lanes.

Once Joel T. Scheuerman, 19, of Lenexa, drove his 2024 Kawasaki Z900 over the hill, Troopers said he hit the bed of the truck.

Emergency crews said Scheuerman and his passenger, Madeline N. Bona, 18, of Lenexa, were taken to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with life-threatening injuries Both were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Law enforcement officials noted that Shortle and his passenger, Wendy C. Shortle, 70, of Marysville, both escaped the crash without injury. Both were wearing seat belts at the time.
