The school board approves the first Master Teacher position at Jennings High

JENNINGS, La. (KPLC) – Last week, the Jeff Davis Parish School Board approved the job description for a Master Teacher position at Jennings High School.

“In talking to colleagues in the state, you know, I think this job is very targeted for us to try to put in place to see if we could get that direct line of support for our classroom teachers,” Jeff said Davis, senior parish assistant Ben Oustalet. .

Oustalet says a Master Teacher is someone dedicated to improving classroom teaching and supporting teachers.

A Master Teacher is different from a standard teacher in that they don’t actually teach classes. The job duties of the master teacher include leading collaborative meetings with teachers and helping teachers plan.

“And they have to go and co-teach and model with the teachers and really do this coaching work so they’re in the classrooms consistently throughout the day so you can see it’s very targeted to be in classrooms, to support teachers and planning, along which it will impact our students,” Oustalet said.

While the Master Teacher position has been in place in several school districts, this will be the first in Jeff Davis Parish.

“So it’s a good setting with a higher volume of teachers for us to study and see how it goes for the rest of the school year,” Oustalet said.

The Master Teacher position is a 10-month teaching salary position.

“We’re a smaller parish, we don’t have a lot of administrators at the school, so I think this will really help them, to make sure the academics are improved, student outcomes are improved,” Oustalet said.

To be qualified for the Master Teacher position, you must be certified by the Louisiana Department of Education and have five years of highly effective teaching experience.
