Union Minister JP Nadda launches five DHR-ICMR health research initiatives

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda here today launched five health research initiatives of the Department of Health Research-Indian Council of Medical Research (DHR-ICMR) planned under the 100-day agenda, said a officially announced.

According to the release, these initiatives aim to propel India to the forefront of global healthcare research and innovation, aligning with the nation’s vision of a Viksit Bharat.

Speaking on the occasion, JP Nadda remarked, “These innovative initiatives exemplify our commitment to a healthier and more self-reliant India. By encouraging local innovation and investing in advanced research, we are equipping our nation to effectively address pressing health challenges.”

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, DHR Secretary and DG ICMR said, “Initiatives like the World First Challenge will empower our scientists and innovators to develop cutting-edge technologies that can benefit not just India but the entire world. We are committed to fostering an environment where research thrives, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes and a stronger global position in medical research for our nation.”

One of the key initiatives launched is the ‘First in the World’ Challenge, inspired by the success of Chandrayaan-3. This high-risk, high-reward R&D scheme is designed to drive the creation of unprecedented health technologies globally.

The program will fund projects at various stages, from proof-of-concept design to prototype and final product development, the statement said. Additionally, under the Pradhan Mantri – Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), ICMR is upgrading the existing Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL) to Infectious Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (IRDL).

“This enhancement includes bacteriology, mycology and parasitology, expanding diagnostic capabilities beyond virology. These laboratories will strengthen India’s capacity for comprehensive surveillance and rapid response to infectious diseases.”

ICMR has also launched the ICMR Data Repository, a centralized, secure and accessible platform of high-quality datasets that ensures data integrity and confidentiality. UNNATI initiative (Update of norms for nutrition, growth and development.

Indian Child Assessment) aims to set India-specific growth and development standards for children, addressing the limitations of existing WHO standards, according to the official release.

ICMR also initiates efforts to develop drugs for rare diseases, focusing on affordable and effective therapies for conditions such as Gaucher disease, sickle cell disease and others.

Ongoing projects range from clinical to animal studies and design phases, with the aim of reducing dependence on imported treatments and improving accessibility for patients in India.
