People in flood zones are getting weather radios in Harlan County

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – Harlan County Emergency Management has received a grant to distribute weather radios to people living in flood zones.

Harlan County Emergency Management established weather radios. If inclement weather occurs, the radio will turn off, alerting the owner of a storm in the area.

“It’s more for human life, that’s what we’re focused on than property, but it gives them an advanced warning so they know,” Harlan County Emergency Management Director Stephen Lewis said.

He said many people in the area have to live in flood plains because they don’t have much flat land to build on.

“People have to live in floodplains, almost in this area,” Lewis said.

Organizers used the federal flood zone map to determine which areas would receive the radios first. 62 radios were distributed on Friday.

Lewis said there will be two more delivery days for other areas. A total of 384 radios will be given to the people of Harlan County.
