New sidewalks increase walkability and safety in Quincy

  • Neighbors used to walk on the grass and HWY 90 before the sidewalk was extended from Chalk St. at Ralph Strong Rd.
  • Construction began in December 2023
  • Watch the video to see where this project is now.

BROADCAST TRANSCRIPT:

Quincy neighbors used to have to take the 90 freeway, but now they don’t have to.

Leaders have been working on this sidewalk project for months.

“It’s an extremely, extremely good thing.”

What Larry Denson is talking about is this sidewalk displayed on your screen.

It stretches from Chalk St to Ralph Strong Road on US 90

“You never know when it might pop up in front of you.”

Larry says he doesn’t personally use this sidewalk, but he drives the busy highway every day.

“You know at night, you can’t see because of the darkness that descends 90.”

The Florida Department of Transportation, city and county have been working on Ralph Strong Road’s pavement project since last December. The sidewalk is now finished.

Friday morning I saw workers putting finishing touches on the HWY 90 sidewalk adding guardrail. This sidewalk is an FDOT project.

“I’ve been walking since I was 44”

Leaders say the purpose of these sidewalks is to make Quincy more walkable, allowing neighbors like Shilda Peoples to feel more connected to the neighborhood.

“It’s better for me because I don’t have to go through all this traffic.

Now, with sidewalks in place, drivers like Larry and walkers like Shilda will be able to move around town, safely.

“With the sidewalk, it’s a lot safer.”

But now, you don’t have to. I’m Ashley Engle, your Quincy neighborhood reporter. City leaders have been working on this sidewalk project for months. I’m checking to see where the project is now
.
The sidewalk is now open for neighbors to use on Ralph Strong Road and US 90.
