EVANSVILLE: Year woman from Indiana was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to neglect resulting in serious injury to her 6-month-old son from a rat attack. The sentence comes weeks after her husband received a lengthy prison sentence in connection with the same incident.
A Vanderburgh County judge was convicted Angel Schonabaum29 years old, after four years in prison. She was given credit for one year already served and the remaining three years were suspended on probation, according to the Evansville Courier & Press.
In September, Schonabaum admitted to being charged with neglect of a dependent. Her attorney did not respond to requests for comment.
The incident occurred in September 2023 when David Schonabaum called 911 to report that their son had been badly injured by rats in their home, authorities said. The child suffered more than 50 rat bites and needed hospital treatment.
David Schonabaum was convicted by a jury in September of three counts of neglect of a dependent. He received a 16-year prison sentence, the maximum for those charges.
An Evansville police detective said in a probable cause affidavit that “all of the fingers on the child’s right hand were missing the flesh from their tips, exposing the bones of the fingertips.” Emergency personnel found the baby lying in a pool of blood in his crib with severe bites to his face, leaving him “permanently disfigured,” according to prosecutor Diana Moers.
The family lived with Angel Schonabaum’s sister, Delaina Thurman, in a home described by investigators as full of trash and infested with rodents. Thurman was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to two counts of neglect of a dependent, court records show.
