“It was just a mother’s instinct,” says the officer who recovered the missing child

It was a heartwarming scene. A The 2-month-old baby returned to his mother after a frantic Amber Alert launched a massive search in Ohio.

Columbus officers retrieved the child and also gave him a gentle touch. Emotions were high and fear was thick.

Two-month-old Caius Burris has been reported missing from Fairfield County. Deputies were looking for the boy and his 27-year-old father.

The massive search in Ohio led Columbus officers to an apartment complex on the Southeast Side, where they found the boy.

WSYX cameras captured officers comforting 2-month-old Caius Burris, even giving him a bottle.

For officers Krystal Mori and Jason Ellsesser, it’s a moment they’ll never forget.

“It was a good feeling. Happy ending to know that the child is safe, that he will go back to where he belonged. We thought dad might be hurting himself and he had the baby. So the main concern was “Where is this child? for me,” Mori said.

“Someone who wants to harm himself is not in the right state of mind. So let’s take the baby and we can worry about everything else later,” Ellsesser said.

The pair, both parents themselves, spoke exclusively to WSYX. The two discussed not only the tense minutes during the search, but also the gentle touch they provided afterward.

“It was definitely nice to know that the baby was safe and then at that point it became obvious that he needed something. He was sad, crying, screaming. We wanted to make sure he was fed, changed and cared for.” Mori said.

“He had been missing for a little while so I didn’t know when his diaper was last changed, when he last ate and I thought, well, he’s being held, so I’m going to go with options B and C, which are he has needs food and needs his diaper changed. So, he went to Giant Eagle and bought some diapers and some food,” Ellsesser said.

In a workplace filled with stress and danger, both said moments like these truly reflect what it means to serve the community.

“It was just the mother’s instinct. Take care of a crying baby and love him and love him until the mother is there,” Mori said.

The child’s father, Russell Burris, was later arrested and faces domestic violence charges.

For Mori and Ellsesser, reuniting baby Caius with his mother is an image they will always remember. For them, it is a reminder of their passion to help others.
