Hyundai will hold an anti-theft event on Saturday to prevent the trend of stolen cars

From The most stolen cars in 2023Hyundai models occupied the first two places.

Now the company is in Vale, making sure Hyundai owners get a software update to prevent theft.

It was a national problem seen in Glendale as well.

“We had about a 400 percent increase,” Commander Jay O’Neill of the Glendale Police Department said of the thefts of Hyundais from 2022 to 2023.

The thefts started because of a social media post that went viral.

“You’re going to have a segment of the population that says, ‘hey, that looks fun.’ It’s absolutely no fun. It’s a crime,” O’Neill said.

Hyundai models manufactured from 2011 to 2021 with key-to-turn ignition are affected. The company has released anti-theft software that drivers must go to the dealership to receive.

“People can come in on Saturday and complete this important update.” David VandeLinde, vice president of Hyundai Motor America, said.

No appointment required, 9am to 3pm on October 26 at all Valley Hyundai dealers.

“We want to make sure all the vehicles are up to date and as safe as possible,” said Earnhardt Hyundai’s Kenny Carson.

Hyundai says 30 percent of drivers have yet to install the update. For owners who have, they see a decrease in stolen cars.

“Anecdotal information from police departments tells us that it’s definitely slowing down, it’s working, but we have more work to do,” VandeLinde said.

Commander O’Neill says all drivers should be vigilant about where they park their cars.

“Park in a well-lit area if you have a garage parking garage,” O’Neill said. “A steering wheel lock is also a great alternative.”

If you can’t make it on Saturday, you can always make a free appointment directly with a Hyundai dealer.
