Rumpke says he was hit by a cyber attack

Rumpke says she was compromised by what she calls “a cybersecurity incident.” Few details were available late Thursday, but the company says it is investigating.

A Rumpke spokesperson told WVXU that the company does not believe customer data or payment processing systems were affected. Garbage collection and recycling are also not affected.

Rumpke issued the following statement to WVXU:

Rumpke is aware of a cyber security incident. The security of our employees’ and customers’ information is and always has been extremely important to us. At this time, we do not believe that any customer payment information or payment processing systems have been affected. The Rumpke service will not be affected in any way. Rumpke is working diligently with forensic experts to investigate this incident. We will provide appropriate notice and resources to anyone affected as soon as we can.

A notice on Rumpke’s website and social media accounts Thursday morning indicated the company was experiencing a temporary outage of its customer service phone line. It is not clear if this problem was related to the cyber incident. The company said phone lines were operational Thursday around 3 p.m.

An anti-ransomware company posted about the attack on its website, suggesting it may have been first reported on October 11. A disclaimer on the site notes that it does not guarantee the 100% accuracy of its data.

Headquartered in Colerain Township, Rumpke employs approximately 4,000 people and operates 14 landfills and 12 recycling facilities, serving customers in five states.
