The $100,000 cash grant is not a substitute for retroactive salary increases

People’s Progressive Party (PPP) GENERAL SECRETARY Bharrat Jagdeo said civil servants will still receive retroactive salary increases as they are separate and unrelated to the $100,000 cash grant.
Civil servants benefited from a retroactive 6.5% pay rise last year and are set to benefit again this year.
“The salary increase and the retroactive salary increase have nothing to do with the cash grant,” Jagdeo said in response to a journalist’s question during a press conference at Freedom House on Thursday.

The President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, announced that instead of the one-time cash grant of $200,000 per household, the government will continue with the one-time cash grant initiative of $100,000 which would be more beneficial to Guyanese considering that some households may have had internal conflicts, among others.
Allaying any anxiety that may have existed among civil servants, Jagdeo said, “Civil servants will get their pay; this (subsidy) does not remove their increments or the retroactivity of wage increases.”

In addition, referring specifically to teachers, he said they will also receive 10 percent and it will be retroactive to January.
Through a multi-year agreement between the government and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), over the next three years, teachers will see a direct increase of approximately 27% in their salaries. In 2024, they will receive a 10 percent increase, in 2025 they will see an eight percent increase, and in 2026 they will see a nine percent increase.

Civil servants will also benefit from other measures recently announced by the government, including a new income tax deduction of $10,000 per child, free tertiary education from January 2025, among others aimed at improving the lives and livelihoods of all Guyanese .
