US Senate candidates talk about how they envision the future of education

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Both Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin and Republican challenger Eric Hovde are in north central Wisconsin today.

Baldwin continued his “people power” tour in Marshfield Thursday morning while Hovde spoke at a candidate forum at UW-Stevens Point in Wausau.

One issue that has been raised is the future of the US Department of Education.

“I think it’s better to educate our children locally, which is how our education system has always worked for most of our country’s history,” Hovde said. “I think we need to get back to it because the people of Wausau and the parents of Wausau know how to teach their kids better than a bunch of bureaucrats and politicians in Washington DC.”

“It operates all the programs that help people get Pell Grants, for example, to get access to affordable college education, and it even enforces civil rights laws that allow people with disabilities to get a public education,” the senator said Baldwin.

Election Day is less than two weeks away and early voting has already begun. If you are not registered to vote, you can register to vote.
