Here’s how many New Yorkers fled the Empire State in 2023: Census data

More people fled New York than other states last year; Almost 1% of the entire Empire State went to other parts of the country, according to newly released U.S. Census data.

More than 480,000 New Yorkers left last year, replaced by just 300,000 new residents; According to the figures, there was a total migration loss of 180,000 people.

This is a smaller figure than in 2022, when net flights were 244,000; However, this shows that the state continues to hemorrhage citizens in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our work is far from over, and the governor will never stop fighting to put money in New Yorkers’ pockets, reduce crime, and create more housing and good jobs across the state.”

Lawrence Levy, director of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University. he told Newsday He said less population loss is a positive sign for New York, but he offered a caveat.

“But at least in this latest accounting, it’s clear things are going in the right direction.”
