Hasnat and Sarjis submit 2 mandates to cancel the last 3 elections and suspend AL’s political activities

Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, coordinators of the Student Anti-Discrimination Movement, filed two writ petitions in the High Court.

The first term seeks annulment of the last three Awami League elections and asked why the ill-gotten gains should not be returned, Hasnat wrote on his Facebook page.

The second petition seeks to know why they should not be barred from all political activities pending a verdict in the first case.

“There is no mention of banning the party or banning it from being registered in the petitions,” Hasnat clarified.

They filed the petition this morning (October 28), senior counsel Ahsanul Karim confirmed.

A hearing on the petitions will take place in the High Court bench later this week.

This latest petition comes after an earlier petition filed in August which sought a complete ban on AL, but was later dismissed by a double bench of the High Court headed by Justice AKM Asaduzzaman on September 1.

On 23 October, the caretaker government imposed a ban on AL’s student wing, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, citing provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Formed on June 23, 1949, the Awami League faced mounting challenges after President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country following a student-led uprising on August 5.
