Fresno police officer shot in exchange of gunfire, suspect dead

A Fresno police officer was involved in a shootout on the 3700 block of East Platt Avenue.

According to Chief Mandy Casto, there was a shooting trip on 8th st. and Verrue streets.

The police have moved to the area and are investigating.

After about an hour, a sergeant was parked in the area when the shooting suspect returned and opened fire on the patrol unit for an unknown reason.

The sergeant was sitting in the patrol unit when he was hit. Even though he had been shot, he began to follow the suspicious vehicle. The chase only lasted about a block when the suspect crashed.

The suspect then got out of the car and started shooting again. The wounded officer and two other patrol units returned fire.

Officers shot the suspect, he went to the ground, then secured and assisted both the suspect and the sergeant. Both were taken to Community Regional Medical Center’s Trauma Unit.

The injured police officer was hit in the lower body and is in a stable condition.

The suspect is dead.

Before that, officers retrieved video from a home that showed a suspect leaving a home carrying a gun.

An officer called two ambulances, one for a “That’s down” suspect and one for himself, then dialed 1199.

While officers were securing one of the four crime scenes, officers went to the residence where the suspect was seen leaving. They forced the door open and discovered that a person had been shot on Verrue Street. That victim is believed to be from the shooter’s original trip at 5:20 p.m

The suspect was firing an AR-style pistol.

Chief Casto said the sergeant showed incredible courage and composure while on fire.
