14 people were treated in the multi-state U-Haul truck chase

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – City police reports say at least 14 people were injured Thursday after a U-Haul being pursued by police in Pennsylvania across the state line crashed on McCartney Road.

Scott Pelton, 27, of Leavittsburg, who he says was the driver of the truck, was arrested around 6:55 p.m. after city police joined other agencies in the 2000 block of McCartney Road in trying to catch the van, which was pursued by Pulaski. Township, Pennsylvania, police.

Pelton is charged in Youngstown with two counts of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and a first-degree misdemeanor count of criminal mischief. He could also be charged for having between 30 and 60 tires on the back of the truck. Reports say anyone transporting more than 10 tires into the city without a permit is subject to a felony charge.

In Pennsylvania, Pelton faces charges of fleeing and eluding, a third-degree felony; two offenses of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs; recklessly endangering another person; and reckless driving.

Lt. Chad Adams of Pulaski police said Pelton rear-ended another car and refused to stop. The other car followed Pelton, who refused to stop until he reached a feed store parking lot.

When police arrived at the parking lot, Pelton did not get out of the car, Adams said. He said Pelton eventually hit the store, smashing a door, and drove off, leading police on a chase on US 422 in Ohio, where he hit at least seven vehicles, Adams said.

Adams said he has sent paperwork to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office to extradite Pelton back to Pennsylvania. He is expected to have an extradition hearing sometime next week in common pleas court.

It’s not yet clear if charges have been filed by Campbell and Coitsville police, who also participated in the pursuit.

Reports say a Pulaski Township officer told township police that Pelton nearly hit a township cruiser during the pursuit.

Reports say Pelton struck several vehicles while driving westbound on McCartney Road, as well as a utility pole, and struck several vehicles that were parked in a car lot on McCartney Road.

Among the people taken to the St. Health Center Elizabeth were two minors who were in a church van, as well as the driver of the van, reports said.
