Custodial death sparks outrage in Lucknow

A 30-year-old man named Mohit Kumar, a resident of Jainabad, Lucknow, died in police custody, sparking a major controversy over alleged police brutality.

Following a complaint by the victim’s mother, an FIR was registered against Inspector Ashwani Chaturvedi and others. A thorough investigation into the incident has been initiated, Additional Commissioner of Police Vibhuti Khand Radha Ram Singh informed. Officials confirmed that the autopsy, which will be filmed, will help determine the exact cause of death.

The issue has gained political clout, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticizing the BJP government, suggesting renaming “police custody” to “torture house” after several allegations of custodial deaths. Police insist that Kumar received prompt medical attention before he died; however, the family of the deceased countered this claim with serious allegations.
