Oregon DHS releases names in abuse and neglect cases in St. Helens amid district scandal

Officials on Thursday announced the names of the people who have open cases of sexual abuse and negligent misconduct at St. Helens.

The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) has released the names of teachers and staff it is actively investigating amid ongoing scandals in the St. Helens.

ODHS investigates the following persons:

  • Mark Collins for alleged sexual abuse
  • Eric Stearns for alleged sexual abuse
  • Katy Wagner for alleged negligence in failing to report child safety issues
  • Scot Stockwell for alleged negligence in failing to report child safety issues

ODHS is also investigating two other people, but St. Helens told KATU that those two people are not currently being investigated by police.

According to ODHS, there were no previous reports against these St. Helens between July 2019 and October 2024.

Officials say there have been no previous reports of safety issues at St. Helens before October this year.

Lyceum St. Helens was jailed between November 14 and 17 just days after police announced the arrestEric Stearns and Mark Collinscurrent and former teacher at St. Helens High School, November 12.

According to community members, school officials closed the school to have a field day for staff to learn how to properly handle allegations of sexual abuse.

Police also say they are investigating a teacher at St. Helens Middle School for misconduct, but did not release his name or the nature of the alleged misconduct.

Authorities urge anyone who suspects ongoing child abuse or neglect to call the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline at 1-855-503-SAFE (7233).

The Vice President of the Board of the School District of St. Helens issued the following statement regarding the latest allegations:

“We are appalled and deeply saddened by the crisis our school community is experiencing after arrests were made for child sexual abuse at St. Helens. We have also just been made aware of an active investigation by the St. Louis Police Department. Helens of one of us. school teachers for alleged criminal conduct. That teacher has been placed on administrative leave and we are cooperating with the St. Louis Police Department. Helens, as this is an active investigation, we cannot comment further on this investigation at this time and must comply with due process and privacy laws.”
