Lansing man changes plea to guilty in accidental overdose death of 15-year-old

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A Lansing man changed his plea to guilty Friday for his role in the 15-year-old’s death Nicholas ‘Cruz’ Burris in January 2023.

Nineteen years old Torin Baughman initially pleaded not guilty in the case. He was charged with distribution of a controlled substance causing death.

The charges date to Jan. 17, 2023, when Cruz Burris took a pill he thought was Percocet, but it was laced with fentanyl. Baughman was believed to have delivered the pill to Cruz.

Cruz’s parents said they found the dealer through Snapchat.

Baughman will be sentenced on January 3, 2025 and could face 147 to 653 months in prison.
