Chicago Jewish Alliance ‘Stop the Hate’ rally demands action from DePaul University after anti-Semitic attack on campus

CHICAGO (WLS) — There was a call for an end to the hatred Thursday after two Jewish students at DePaul University were attacked.

Rally organizers stood in the exact spot where police say students were targeted earlier this month as they showed support for Israel.

The two Jewish students, Max Long and Michael Kaminsky, and their lawyer are now blaming the university for the violent attack. Those students are now calling for new policies that they say should better protect all students.

Wrapped in the Israeli flag as a symbol of their unwavering Jewish pride, Long and Kaminsky returned to the scene of the violent crime on campus, defiant.

I am a proud Jew. A Zionist. And a DePaul University student has pledged to defend the dignity and safety of Israel and the Jewish people,” Long said.

That’s the message Long and Kaminsky say they were trying to send Nov. 6 as the pair took their weekly spot outside the DePaul Student Center with a sign offering to talk about the war in Gaza.

That’s when students and police say two masked men attacked the pair from behind, hitting Long and breaking Kaminsky’s wrist.

“After the physical attack, Michael and I were verbally harassed by other students who told us we got what we deserved,” Long said.

“As of October 7, the university has taken little or no actionable steps to protect its Jewish students,” Kaminsky said.

In a statement in response to the rally, DePaul said that so far this quarter it has hired a new Jewish life chaplain, is working with its religious student groups to redesign its spaces, and has launched a teacher training program and of staff to facilitate difficult conversations around the world. different perspectives

Jewish leaders say the attack on Long and Kaminsky shows it is not enough, and with their masked attackers still at large, they are demanding more.

“Jewish students are afraid to walk on their own campus with their Jewish symbols outside without fear of being attacked,” said Josh Weiner, CEO of the Jewish Alliance of Chicago.

Lawfare Project attorneys representing the two students who were attacked say they have not ruled out legal action against DePaul University.

“You have to encourage dialogue, not silence it,” Long said.
