Enger Tower turns purple for pancreatic cancer awareness

Local news, sports, weather presented by the WDIO News Team

The Duluth skyline was a little more colorful than usual Thursday night.

The Enger Tower glowed a gorgeous shade of purple in honor of November 21st, World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

With a single-digit survival rate, pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in the world.

This year, on the 10th anniversary of World Pancreatic Cancer Day, loved ones, communities like Duluth and organizations around the world are coming together to help people everywhere by spreading the word about symptoms and resources.

The pancreas is a gland, about six inches long, located in the abdomen. It is shaped like a flat pear and is surrounded by the stomach, small intestine, liver, spleen and gall bladder. The wide end of the pancreas on the right side of the body is called the head. The middle sections are the neck and body.

The thin end of the pancreas on the left side of the body is called the tail. The uncinate process is the part of the gland that bends back and under the head of the pancreas. Two very important blood vessels, the superior mesenteric artery and the superior mesenteric vein, cross behind the neck of the pancreas and in front of the uncinate process. The pancreas is both an exocrine and an endocrine gland and has two main functions: digestion and blood sugar regulation.
