A youth was subjected to inhuman torture after being tied to a pole in the balcony of a house in Gazipur’s Sreepur Municipality area over allegations of stealing an auto-rickshaw.

The incident sparked outrage after a video of the torture surfaced on social media last night (November 21). Police have since detained one person in connection with the incident.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Mintu Mia, is the son of Ayub Ali of Baherachala village in Sreepur municipality.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Zainal Abedin Mondal confirmed the incident, saying, “The video of the torture came to our attention through social media. Based on preliminary information, we conducted a raid and arrested a suspect involved. in the incident, the detainee is being questioned and legal action will be taken once the victim files an official complaint.”

The widely circulated video shows the young man, wearing a yellow shirt and lungi, tied to a cement post with his hands behind his back. Another youth, dressed in a white T-shirt and blue jeans, can be seen pulling the victim’s legs and torturing him. At some point, the attacker climbs on the victim’s legs and starts jumping on them.

The video also captures the victim shouting “O ma, mago” (O mother) as the perpetrators continue their attack.

Although several individuals at the scene tried to stop the attackers, their efforts were unsuccessful. The torture escalated as the victim was pressured to confess to the alleged theft.

Local residents reported that the youth was beaten up for allegedly stealing a rickshaw.

“She was crying loudly but they didn’t stop. One person tried to intervene but failed,” said a witness.
