Widows of slain policemen receive money and food in Abia

Widows and other family members of policemen who were killed on active duty have received cash, food and other relief items from the Peace Fund for Victims of Insecurity in Nigeria.

The items were presented to the families at the headquarters of the Abia State Police Command in Umuahia on Friday during the commencement of the distribution in the South East region.

The presentations were made at the conclusion of the group’s preliminary documentation of the slain officers and interface with the country’s security high commands.

Five families profiled received a cash gift of 1 million Naira each and food items, even though the other nine families who also received food items will receive their own money after verification of their records by the Peace Fund.

Explaining the development, the Secretary of the Peace Fund for Victims of Insecurity, Mary Ikoku, noted that the fund was created to provide relief to the families of security officials who paid the ultimate price for serving their homeland.

In his speech, the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Police Command, Danladi Isah, thanked the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, for the establishment of the Fund, saying the gifts given to the families of the slain officers will encourage serving officers.

The police commissioner, who said policemen face danger every day trying to secure the lives of Nigerians, said Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun has established and launched many welfare schemes to support serving policemen and families of deceased officers.
