The Citroen C3 Aircross scored 0 stars in NCAP Latino crash tests

The Citroen Aircross’s footwell and bodywork, however, were rated as stable and were deemed capable of withstanding further loading.

Citroen C3 Aircross, now called just “Aircross‘, was recently tested by Latin NCAP and received disappointing results, achieving a safety rating of 0 stars. The test was conducted on the Brazilian-spec model and these results do not apply to the Indian-spec Aircross. The Brazilian version scored poorly, mainly due to the absence of key safety features such as 6 airbags and driver assistance systems such as lane keep assist and lane departure warning.

However, given that the SUV’s body has been rated as stable, the Aircross’s structure is not weak and should be able to prevent any major impact to the vehicle in an unfortunate scenario like a car crash. Let’s take a look at the results in detail.

Protection of adult occupants

The Citroen Aircross scored 33.01% (13.20) for adult occupant protection. This includes the overall scores from the frontal and side impact tests.

Frontal impact

The head and neck of the driver and passenger received “good” protection, while the driver’s chest received “marginal” protection and the passenger’s chest received “poor” protection. The knees of both front occupants had “marginal” protection mainly due to internal components behind the vehicle’s fascia. The driver’s and passenger’s left shins showed “adequate” protection, while the passenger’s right shin showed “good” protection. However, both the footwell and body integrity of the Citroen Aircross were deemed “stable” and able to withstand subsequent loading.

Side impact

Head, abdomen and pelvis protection was “good”, while chest protection was “adequate”.

Side pillar test

The side pillar test was not performed as the Brazilian-spec Aircross does not get side and curtain airbags.

Protection of child occupants

Aircross received 11.37% in child passenger protection. Here’s the breakdown of it:

Frontal impact

For the 3-year-old, rear-facing child seats were installed via ISOFIX anchorages. It was able to prevent exposure of the head and provided “good” protection for the child. Rear-facing child seats were also installed for the 18-month-old, and the restraint system prevented the head from being exposed, providing full protection, showing slightly more chest deceleration.

Side impact

Both CRSs provided full protection. The car has ISOFIX anchorages as standard, however, its marking does not meet the Latin NCAP criteria according to reports.

Pedestrian protection

The car provided “marginal” and “adequate” protection in most head impact areas. Some areas towards the windshield and A-pillar showed “poor” and “poor” protection. For the upper leg, protection was “poor” along the borders, but improved to “good” in a small central section. The lower part of the foot demonstrated “good” protection.

Safety assistance

As the Citroen Aircross does not come with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features, only the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) test was conducted. The Aircross scored 34.88 percent (15 points) on this test.

The car offers ESC as standard. Moose test performance reached a maximum speed of up to 85 km/h without failure.

Safety features provided

The Brazilian-spec version of the Aircross comes with safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC) and a tire pressure monitoring system. It also gets 3-point seat belts for all seats.

In comparison, the India-spec Aircross SUV gets all the safety features mentioned above, but additionally comes with 6 airbags and seat belt reminder for all seats as standard.

Price range and rivals

In Brazil, the Citroen Aircross is priced between BRL 115,990 and BRL 138,590 (Rs 16.94 lakh and Rs 20.24 lakh in INR). In India, it is priced from Rs 8.49 lakh to Rs 14.55 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It supports compact SUVs like Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevateand Volkswagen Taigun.
