residents concerned about the proposed location

VAN ALSTYNE, Texas (KXII) – Residents who live near the proposed property voiced some of their concerns at the planning and zoning meeting.

Residents and city officials all agree a new public safety unit is needed for the city’s officers and firefighters.

A $30 million project will fund a 45,000-square-foot building, but the location isn’t ideal for some who live near the proposed site.

“How you do this will affect me,” said one resident.

“I’m worried about the lights, you know all this at night, that’s where our bedrooms are, that’s where our family room is.”

“What will the crowds be? What will the noise level be? Will they turn off those sirens?

“Let’s go, but let’s also respect our budgets, let’s respect the citizens who made their voices known, let’s respect the children in that area being near the school.”

“The main goal is to make sure that as we consider zoning changes, the city will address these citizen concerns.”

The city manager said they are willing to schedule future meetings and work with residents and allow architects to consider input.

Wednesday night’s discussion at the planning and zoning meeting was a zoning hearing only, the board unanimously approved the zoning change recommendation. It will now go before the city council in January.
