The country music star battling cancer headed for liver surgery

Raul Malo, lead singer of the popular country music band The Mavericks, has been openly battling cancer this year, keeping his fans in the loop.

It seems that for the most part, Malo did well in the fight, but he returned to social media with another update on Friday, in which fans sent prayers.

Malo shared a video on Instagram of himself in a Yankees cap, playing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on guitar. He also provided a caption apologizing to fans planning to see the band at New Hope Winery in December.

“Doctors don’t want to risk missing the window to successfully operate on the liver (especially after the first procedure went so well),” he wrote. “But the hopes are to start the year strong, rested and healthy. All Mavericks shows will be playing, including closing out our year at the Ryman. Thank you all for your loving support and understanding of the fluid situation we have faced. Meanwhile… Play Ball!!!! Go (Yankees).”

Fans were quick to respond with positivity and well wishes.

“Please take care,” one person wrote. “That’s all that matters right now. we love you I hope to see you again soon. We missed you on the steamer.”

“Just do what you gotta do Raul to stay healthy,” wrote another. “We love you and pray for you.”

Malo announced his diagnosis in late June in an Instagram video.

“For the last few years, we’ve been out here on the road, enjoying our health,” he said. “We were treating each other a little better. We take care of ourselves a little better and really try to do all the right things in terms of nutrition, etc. So part of the health journey is to check yourself. Go to the doctor, get a medical examination and start from there.”

Malo said that’s what he did.

“And that led to another appointment with a gastrointestinal specialist, which led to a CAT scan,” he said. “And that turned out to show two cancerous spots.”
