How many people died in the Kitui village fire

The devastating fire engulfed Kitui village in Majengo on Tuesday, November 19, leaving six people dead and over 100 families homeless.

Metrine Muhonja is among the many families who lost their loved ones after the death of her husband and their two children.

Speaking to Eastleigh Voice, Munjoja recounted how the fire broke out at around 7pm before it spread.

Muhonja painfully recalled how she went outside to collect clothes from the line when she noticed flames.

The devastated woman said she tried to re-enter the house to save her husband and children, but her neighbors held her back.

“I went outside to take off my clothes when I came back the fire was too big. I tried to enter the house to save my family, but I couldn’t.

“They were all sleeping inside and my husband was spelling while holding the children, one was 6 years old, another 4 years old and the last born 1 year old,” Muhonja recounted painfully.

Unable to enter her home and save her family, she watched helplessly as the fire consumed everything. The bodies of their loved ones have since been recovered.

What was the cause of the Majengo fire?

According to the observer, it was suspected that it was the fire caused by an electrical fault in one of the residences.

Images shared online showed shocked residents frantically trying to put out the flames.

With the support of the NCC Fire Department, RCATs and Community Disaster Response Teams (CBDRTs), the fire was eventually contained.

The Kenya Red Cross Society has affirmed its commitment to support the affected community during this difficult time.
