Injury-plagued Toronto Maple Leafs place Max Domi on IR as center depth continues to be tested

The Toronto Maple Leafs placed before Max Domi on injured reserve retroactive to Wednesday, Nov. 16, citing a lower-body injury.

Domi, who has missed skates the past two weeks due to maintenance, skated as the team’s second-line center in Tuesday’s practice between William Nylander and Matthew Knies.

During the update Austin Matthews‘ injury status, general manager Brad Treliving confirmed that Domi played through an injury.

“(Domi) is going through a lot right now,” Treliving said. “It went a little overboard.”

The team recalled right-hander Nikita Grebenkin from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL to fill Domi’s roster spot.

The Maple Leafs injuries are piling up

The Maple Leafs center depth is being tested amid injuries to Matthews, David Kampf and now Domi.

Called up on Tuesday, Fraser Minten skated as the team’s third-line center in Tuesday’s practice.

Grebenkin, 21, has four goals and 10 points in 13 games this season with the Marlies, his first season in North America. The 2022 fifth-round pick won the KHL’s Gagarin Cup last season with Magnitogorsk Metallurg after scoring 19 goals and 41 points in 67 regular-season games.

The Maple Leafs will host the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday.
