A 92-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and rape following the death of a woman in Bristol 57 years ago.

Louisa Dunne, 75, was found dead in her home in Brittania Road, Easton, by a neighbor on 28 June 1967.

Avon and Somerset Police said they began looking into the investigation, including further forensic analysis of some items, in 2023 and an Ipswich man was arrested on Tuesday morning.

According to the force, the arrest comes after a “significant development in the investigation”.

Det Insp Dave Marchant said: “This is a watershed moment in an atrocious and painful case which has gone unsolved for over six decades.

“We recognize this will also come as a shock to the Easton community.”

He said that although the “tragic incident” happened many years ago, there will be people who remember the crime or who have connections with Ms Dunne’s family.

He said her next of kin have been informed of the developments and are receiving assistance from expert family liaison officers.

Det Insp Marchant said the public may witness “operational police activity in the Ipswich area” following the arrest.
