70 people affected by gastrointestinal diseases on a month-long cruise to Los Angeles

Seventy people on a Princess Cruises ship suffered a gastrointestinal illness during their month-long voyage from Singapore to Los Angeles.

Of the 1,822 passengers on board, 55 of them reported being sick on the cruise ship, called the Coral Princess. Another 15 of the 907 crew members showed similar symptoms, such as diarrhea and vomiting, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.

The ship departed on 17 October and the outbreak was reported on 9 November. The CDC also considered norovirus as the “causative agent” because of the reported symptoms. According to another CDC article, the virus can also be transmitted through food, and people of all ages can get sick from the virus.

As of Nov. 10, the Coral Princess had made eight stops in Thailand, Vietnam, China and Japan before stopping in Hawaii, the British publication Daily Mail reported.

The ship then arrived in Los Angeles on November 17 to hand over affected passengers and crew, before embarking on a 16-day voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Miami, the same afternoon, the Daily Mail said.

The CDC reported that Princess Cruises said it had increased cleaning and disinfection procedures as part of its outbreak prevention and response plan.

The company also said it collected stool samples from cases of gastrointestinal disease for testing.

The CDC’s ship sanitation program said it is monitoring the situation remotely, including reviewing the ship’s outbreak response and sanitation procedures.
