Medical examiner identifies pedestrian struck by train in West Ashley

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – The Charleston County Coroner has identified the pedestrian who was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by an Amtrak train.

Elvin Thomas Dixon, 73, of Charleston, died in the crash, according to Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal.

The crash happened at about 5:25 a.m. on the railroad tracks near Highway 61 and Bees Ferry Road, Inspector Michael Gillooly said.

Investigators say it appeared the pedestrian was trying to cross the tracks at the time. No injuries were reported to passengers on the train, Gillooly said.

The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. Police did not close lanes in the area, but witnesses reported that the train had been stopped on the tracks earlier that morning while the scene was active.
