Prayagraj: A 24-year-old man allegedly shot dead his ‘girlfriend’, who married another person four days ago, before killing herself with the same gun in Pratapgarh’s Madafarpur village on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Jyoti Verma and Udayraj Verma (a resident of Sihati Khalsa (Dilippur). Police also recovered a country-made pistol of .315 bore and a mobile phone from Udayraj’s dead body.
Senior police officials including SP (Pratapgarh) Dr. Anil Kumar along with the forces and forensic experts rushed to the spot and conducted investigations.
Eyewitnesses said they heard gunshots and saw a young man running towards the canal road. His body was later found about 300m from where the woman was found in a pool of blood.
“Both deceased were in a relationship for the last two years. However, the woman’s marriage was solemnized with another person by her family members four days ago. She came to her parents’ house on the fourth day as per tradition and was targeted by Udayraj,” the SP said.
Investigations revealed that Udayraj was upset because of her marriage to another person and was following the woman’s movements.
The woman was rushed to the district hospital in Pratapgarh, from where the doctors referred her to the SRN Hospital in Prayagraj. However, she died during treatment.
The SP said the bodies have been sent for post-mortem and a fresh inquiry has been launched.
