A former nurse performed CPR on the second-line victim in New Orleans, who later died

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A former nurse was one of the first to respond and render aid to a victim who later died after one of two shootings near a second line parade in St. Roch on Sunday (November 18).

The victim was a Marrero man, hit in a triple shooting on the Almonaster Bridge, just 45 minutes after a mass shooting injured 10 people along the parade route.

New Orleans police are searching for the shooters and have not gone so far as to connect the two incidents, which have drawn condemnation from state and local officials. The shootings happened during Nine Times Social Aid and Pleasure Club second line.

During the second shooting, former nurse Chenise Hollins said she called to check on her family after learning about the first. While on Almonaster Bridge, she said she noticed a crowd clustered to her left.

“I just asked, ‘What’s going on?’ They said, “Oh, there are some bodies over there.” I said, “Oh, is anyone alive? Breathing? Do they need help?” she said.

“Someone said, ‘Barely.’ And when I heard ‘barely’, I said ‘OK, then I have a chance to help. And I just went for a run. I didn’t even think about it, I just ran.”

2 dead, 10 injured in separate shootings in St. Roch Sunday afternoon, police said

Hollins said when he arrived, a medic was already treating one of the victims, who was still breathing.

“I just started doing compressions and kind of alternated. Between each round, I alternated,” she said. “It wasn’t enough. It just wasn’t enough.”

She later learned that the victim she tried to save was 21-year-old Rasean Carter. Carter was shot alongside his family member, 19-year-old Malachi Jackson.

A third shooting victim at the bridge site survived.

“I have two daughters and I hope someone will help them if they ever need it,” Hollins said. “Not even something as significant as this. But if my kids needed help, I would hope someone would help them.

“Being a healthcare professional, I’ve had a lot of deaths and seen a lot. Yesterday was the first time I saw something like this, outside of a medical setting.”

No arrests have been made in connection with the shootings, and officials are asking for the public’s help in solving the cases.

Sucking. NOPD Anne Kirkpatrick said the department had an increased police presence on the second line because of previous violence at similar events. The NOPD said it had not yet determined whether the two shootings were related.

Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in each of the shooting cases. Tipsters can remain anonymous when calling (504) 822-1111.

Hollins said he hopes the community will rally around the victims’ families and help them find closure by turning in the suspects.

“Everybody has this mentality of, ‘I’ll take care of myself.’ And apparently your neighbor is your business,” she said. “The people who live in your community are your business.”
