Video shows Columbus Division Police Officer Gloria West rescuing a man from a burning truck in Ohio on I-270 and I-71

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Columbus Police Department released dramatic body camera footage of officers rescuing a man from his burning pickup truck near Interstate 71 and Interstate 270 Wednesday morning.

A man who identified himself as Randy called 911 to say his truck crashed into a highway pole around 4:30 a.m. and caught fire after experiencing brake problems.

“I got on I-270 and it’s, I can’t slow down,” the man said.

Seconds later, the man can be heard screaming for help inside his truck, now on fire.

At one point during the six-minute call to 911, the man asks the dispatcher to send a message to his wife, fearing she won’t make it out alive.

“Tell my wife I love her, please tell my wife I love her,” Randy said.

But less than a minute later, Columbus Police arrived on the scene. As the officers try to determine how to pull the victim to safety, Officer Gloria West runs to the burning truck.

West can be heard on her body-worn camera telling fellow officers, “I’m not going to leave him there.”

FOP said ABC affiliate WSYX West has been with the division for about a year.

Body camera officers immediately begin medical treatment on the victim.

“They were there quickly, they immediately offered help, they immediately tried to take their clothes off,” Steel said. “Smoke. This man was on fire. He wouldn’t have lived 100 percent if he hadn’t taken the steps they took.”

The crash closed eastbound I-270 to the I-71 ramp for several hours.

The victim is now in intensive care at OSU Wexner Medical Center and is listed in fair condition.

Officer West was treated for minor burns and is expected to be OK.

The victim’s wife did not want to speak on camera but WSYX said she appreciated what the officer had done for her husband.
