Caught on camera: Woman allegedly attacks couple over pro-Palestinian sweatshirt at Downers Grove Panera

UPDATE: Hate crime charges were filed against 64-year-old Alexandra Szustakiewicz.

An attack was caught on camera Downers Grove and it was all over a sweatshirt supporting Palestine.

A husband and his pregnant wife said they were yelled at, cursed at, slapped and had coffee thrown at them. Now Downers Grove police are on the case.

Words can sting and actions can sting even harder.

What started as a quiet afternoon at the Downers Grove Panera Bread turned into a chaotic standoff caught on camera Saturday afternoon.

Just like the palm, a woman landed on Waseem Zahran’s face after she tried to throw hot coffee on him and his pregnant wife.

“She walked by and saw my Palestinian sweater, and that made her go, like, ‘Fuck you Palestine,’ and like other people, like, ‘Fuck you, fuck you,’ Palestine,” Zahran said .

Zahran said Downers Grove police arrived shortly after the incident, but the woman took off.

“She started saying that ‘it’s my land’ – about Palestine – ‘not your country. This is America. You can’t wear that hoodie,” Zahran said.

The video was about a minute long.

The 25-year-old told Fox 32 that the verbal and physical attack was completely unprovoked.

“I did everything I could not to touch her because I knew as soon as I did something the roles would be reversed. She would be the victim and the strong, brown, handsome man attacked as a poor young woman, and I didn’t want the story to be reversed and she gets away with what she did,” he said.

Customers did not intervene. Some of them didn’t even look up.

“Immediately after the incident happened, the Panera Bread workers went up to her and comforted her and took her behind the counter and kind of listened to her side of the story, helped her to a cleaner,” said Zahran.

Now, the fallout continues online. Zahran said he has been facing death threats, with messages that wish ill on his family.

“I got death threats saying ‘I hope your child dies’ and ‘I hope your wife gets deported when Trump comes back,'” Zahran said. “It honestly shows how our society is at this moment.”

Zahran said Panera workers eventually came to her aid.

Panera Bread released a statement about the incident Sunday night.

“We are aware of the unfortunate incident that happened in our bakery-cafe and are working with our team to look into this matter. Panera seeks to create a warm and welcoming environment for all,” the statement said.
