21-year-old charged in connection with whistle-blowing incident with 56 commitments

Iowa City police say 21-year-old Joseph Gaya was arrested after continuing to intervene in their investigation into an alleged tip-off incident involving dozens of people at the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity last week in campus of the University of Iowa.

According to the criminal complaint, the officers told Gaya to back off several times before getting between them and witnesses.

Police say Gaya told witnesses not to say anything, and when he was told to move away again, he stated, “You can go, how about that.”

Gaya was eventually told to leave the house by the sorority members.

He now faces a charge of tampering with official documents.

The University of Iowa has placed the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity on provisional suspension pending an investigation into a potential whistleblowing incident.

On Nov. 15, UI police, as well as the Iowa City police and fire departments, responded to an early morning fire alarm at the fraternity house and found 56 blindfolded pledges in the basement.

The UI Office of Student Responsibility notified the Alpha Delta Phi president that it must suspend all operations pending the outcome of the investigation due to the seriousness of the allegations.
